Dr. John Koprowski named SNRE Director

Vice President for Agriculture, Life and Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension Shane Burgess has announced that Professor John L. Koprowski has been named Director of the School of Natural Resources and the Environment effective July 1, 2018. Dean Burgess?s announcement noted:

?I have the very great pleasure to announce that, after an extremely comprehensive and, in my experience, exceptional shared-governance leadership process from School of Natural Resources and the Environment faculty and other employees, I have appointed Dr. John Koprowski as the School of Natural Resources and the Environment Director.?

John served as Associate Director of SNRE over the past three years and he has been an invaluable member of outgoing Director Stu Marsh?s team responsible for the significant growth of the School. His leadership experience and talents will be of enormous value to the students, faculty and staff of the School as SNRE continues to grow and chart new and exciting directions.

John was born and raised in northeast Ohio and graduated with a BS in Zoology from Ohio State University.  He received his PhD in 1991 in Biology from the University of Kansas and is a Professor of Wildlife Conservation and Management within SNRE and where he has been a faculty member since 2000.  John serves as the Head of the Conservation Research Laboratory as well as Director of the Mt. Graham Biology Programs.  He teaches courses in general ecology, animal behavior and wildlife conservation and has mentored more than 45 graduate students.  His research program focuses on the ecology and conservation of rare mammals in the United States, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Nepal, China, South Africa and numerous other international locations.  John has authored >135 peer-reviewed scientific articles on animal behavior, conservation, disturbance and ecology of mammals, 30 book and proceedings chapters, and 4 books, most recently the co-authored volume, Squirrels of the World and the upcoming International Wildlife Management: Response to Global Challenges.  He serves the IUCN as a North American Red List Coordinator, is on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Mammalogists, and is a Fellow of The Wildlife Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. John lives in the Sonoran Desert in Tucson, Arizona with his wife, Nancy, college-aged children, Emma and Zach, and their two rescue dogs.
