Snyder Refuge & Field School Inaugural Open House Recap

On April 24–25, we hosted the inaugural open house for the Dr. Richard G. Snyder Wildlife Refuge & Field School. With more than 100 attendees, including neighbors, science educators, conservation leaders from across Tucson, University of Arizona faculty and staff, and friends and loved ones of Dr. Snyder, this 2-day event was a tremendous success!

Visitors had the opportunity to learn about the mission and vision for the refuge and field school, tour the grounds and facilities, explore ongoing wildlife research, see how drones are used to monitor vegetation health, participate in dragonfly catch-and-release activities, join a guided plant walk, and share ideas for advancing the Snyder Wildlife Refuge & Field School mission.

The event was also an opportunity for us to listen and learn from the community. Neighbors shared perspectives on how we can maintain a respectful presence, educators and University of Arizona faculty and staff offered ideas for engaging educational programming, and conservation leaders discussed ways we can stay connected and collaborate toward the shared goal of protecting wildlife and the habitats they depend on.

Seeing the wildlife refuge come alive with so much energy and shared purpose was incredibly rewarding. We aren't just managing a beautiful piece of Arizona landscape; we are building a collaborative hub where researchers, neighbors, and future conservationists can connect directly with nature. The immense feedback and passion we received over these two days prove that Snyder is well on its way to becoming a premier living laboratory for hands-on learning and community-driven stewardship.

The conversations and connections formed during the open house will help shape the next chapter of Snyder, guiding future educational programming, community events, and fundraising efforts throughout the coming year.
