ABSTRACT: The native fish of Sonora are represented by 109 species of Nearctic and Neotropical origin. Seventy nine species are strictly freshwater. Endemic species are scarce for the state but much of the fish biodiversity is restricted to the biotic regions of Mexico and the United States of America. Briefly, the progress in knowledge of the occurrence, abundance and current situation of the populations of several species of native fish for the region is reported. With the use of examples of native species in Sonora, the main areas of research and knowledge required for the management of this unique fauna are indicated.
