Graduate student Thandiwe Mweetwa has recently co-authored a study in the journal Biological Consevation, titled "Detecting declines of apex carnivores and evaluating their causes: An example with Zambian lions." The study evaluates changes in population growth rates, survival and reproduction in Zambia's South Luangwa following a 2013 ban on hunting lions. The study found hunting to be the leading cause of death in the lion population, and recommends continuation of the hunting ban to allow for population recovery.
