Dr. Steve Archer's research on desert plants has been featured in Science News for Students, a publication by the Society for Science & the Public in Washington, DC. The article refers to Dr. Archer's research on the response of velvet mesquite and cat's claw acacia to short pulses of rain which can become quite frequent at certain times of the year. The study looks at the germination period of the plants in a greenhouse setting, to determine how quickly the plants are able sprout. In order for the plants to survive, they must be able to germinate quickly while the soil is still moist.
