Seminar: Forging a Sustainable Southwest

We summarize how Pima County developed one of the most far- reaching large- landscape conservation and urban planning efforts in the United States: the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan. The SDCP, in tandem with Pima County’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan, provides a framework for both protecting the region’s biological heritage and supporting economic vitality in a county whose population currently increases by 25 percent each decade. We recount how the county’s residents came to support a combination of investments, incentives, and regulations aimed at ensuring that the beauty and natural environment of the region will endure for generations to come.
