A new paper co-authored by UA researcher, Dr. Melanie Culver, and UA alumni, Dr. Bob Fitak, presents the sequence of the Florida Panther genome. Florida Panthers are vital players in the ecosystem's food web, however, population decline has resulted in genetic defects and diseases due to inbreeding. The research team found that genetic diversity was substantially improved by translocations of Texas pumas into the population. Genome sequencing further allows researchers to identify key genes influencing disease susceptibility and trait evolution. Find more details here.
