Speaker Bio:
Dr. Rasmussen is a Professor of Soil Science in the Department of Environmental Science at the University of Arizona and has over 30 years of experience working in natural and managed ecosystems ranging from Southwestern deserts to alpine forests, as well as agronomic and mine-land systems. He has been at the University of Arizona for just over 20 years, and prior to that completed his graduate degree in Soil Science at UC Davis and worked as a consulting Soil Scientist in the wine and table grape industry. He teaches classes in Soil Genesis and Classification, as well as Soil Geomorphology. The research in his lab is focused on soil formation and soil forming processes, predictive soil mapping, biogeochemical cycling of elements such as carbon, silica, and other nutrients, and mineral weathering. Recent projects include quantifying conifer ecosystem response to wildfire, measuring change in soil health associated with different agronomic management systems in the western and central US, and understanding controls on soil development and vegetation establishment in reclaimed mine-lands.
