About the M.S. Water, Society & Policy and M.S. Urban Planning dual degree

This dual degree program provides a unique niche for graduate students to enhance their opportunities in industry, non-governmental organizations, and government by providing space to explore and gain expertise in water science and resource management, sustainable urban and regional planning and the application of technology to address key water-related challenges facing society.

It prepares you for careers in community development; environmental and natural resources planning; hazard mitigation and disaster recovery planning; parks and recreation development; project management; smart city planning; sustainability; urban design; and more.

This program gives you the opportunity to earn a Master of Science in Urban Planning from the School of Landscape Architecture and Planning and a Master of Science in Water, Society and Policy from the School of Natural Resources and the Environment within three years.

You must apply and be accepted separately into the College of Architecture, Planning & Landscape Architecture M.S. in Urban Planning and our M.S. in Water, Society & Policy to enroll in this dual degree program.

Dual Requirements: 47 units minimum (depending on demonstrated competency in MSUP):

  • M.S. Water, Society & Policy: 32 units
    • 9 core units
    • 3-4 science core units
    • 12 elective units
    • 2 seminar units (RNR 696W)
    • 6 units of Master's Report (RNR 909)
  • M.S. Urban Planning: 32 units
    • 26 core units
    • 6 elective units
    • 15 primary and secondary concentration units
  • Dual elective potential: up to 16 concentration or elective units can be shared between the two programs
