The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is a federal science agency that is part of the Department of Interior. The USGS mission is to monitor, analyze, and predict current and evolving dynamics of complex human and natural Earth-system interactions and to deliver actionable intelligence at scales and timeframes relevant to decision makers.(Earth-system science has many themes and within the USGS these themes are implemented in mission areas: Mapping, Ecosystems, Energy and Minerals, Natural Hazards, and Water Resources.

The Southwest Biological Science Center focuses on ecosystem science; ecological and physical scientists in its Terrestrial Drylands Ecology Branch conduct research supporting the information and data needs of resource managers and decision makers, with a focus on the arid Southwest.

Kathryn Thomas USGS research ecologist and Terrestrial Drylands Ecology Deputy for Science and Pam Nagler USGS research physical scientist will present an overview of the Branch’s research and a bit more focus on their own research.
