The twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss are among the world’s most urgent challenges, and they are interconnected. Alpine wetlands, mid-elevation forests, and desert grasslands—critical ecosystems for biodiversity and carbon storage—face escalating threats from climate warming, wildfires, and drought. What are the ecosystem consequences of these stressors? I will present findings from climate warming experiments in the Andean alpine wetlands (páramo), wildfires in Southwestern US forests, and drought simulations in the Sonoran Desert, focusing on the responses of plant and soil microbial communities.
