ABSTRACT:Ecology is a vast, multi-facetted science. In theory and in practice, ecological systems tend to be difficult to manage, even difficult to reason about. But then we use models ? mental models to arrange our thoughts, mathematical models for precision in inference and communication, computational models for inquiry and planning. In this lecture, I will present a review of the different approaches that have been used for ecological modeling, discussing their motivation, benefits and drawbacks. Then I will exemplify how an actual model can be built, piece by piece, using my Universal Simulator modeling tool (www.ecolmod.org). The presentation involves no mathematics.
