SNRE Director Marsh Op-Ed published in the Arizona Daily Star on “Reducing the Chance of Big Fires is Less Costly than Fighting Them”

Thursday, July 31, 2014

Dr. Stuart Marsh, Director of SNRE, has published an op-ed in the Arizona Daily Star, "Reducing chance of fires is cheaper than fighting them." The article examines different methods of fire management and prevention, and compares the cost of emergency firefighting to more economical methods such as thinning and perscribed burns. The University of Arizona including faculty and affiliates with the School of Natural Resources and the Environment are also involved in other activities aimed at reducing the chance of megafires. Funding critical forest management efforts like these is essential to ensuring the sustainability of western forests.
